Feeling Networking Resentment? You’re Not Alone

Networking shouldn’t be a chore.

I know that's the sentiment that creeps up on many of us.

It’s the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about.

Resentment is born when we view networking as a mad grab for business cards instead of a two-way street of give and take.

The Philly mastermind group tackled this question, inspired by Robin Odegard’s recent discussion on her “Quick Hits” podcast:

“In networking, what causes you to feel resentment, and what do you do about it?”

These are the group’s takeaways from our conversation on how to avoid networking resentment:

  • Reflection Is Key: When you feel resentment, take a moment to look in the mirror. Remember that networking is more about giving than receiving—that’s when it works best.
  • Value Beyond the Group: Reflect on whether or not these are valuable relationships you’re building, even beyond and after you cease to be a part of the group.
  • Define Your Purpose: Articulate your goal in participating in the networking group.

Networking should never feel like filing your taxes or taking a trip to the dentist—it’s an opportunity to build connections.

These insights come from a vibrant discussion among HighRise Networks Mastermind Philadelphia I members, including Patrick Timoney of Devine Timoney Law Group, Kevin Ryan of Citrin Cooperman & Company, Bryan Hornung of Xact IT Solutions, Neil Hilkert of PAX Legal, Ryan Stillwell of Stillwell Risk Partners, Andy Levine of Stradley Ronon, and Paul Savini of Viaable.
