“Good” Is Overrated

You don’t want just good for your business.

You want great.

You want to keep those fires from starting and derailing your day.

I’m not talking about perfection in every aspect of your day.

I’m talking about actively working toward less friction among your team and processes.

That’s what David Whitwell helped me achieve at Bright Orange Thread.

He’s a fractional CFO with 15 years of experience working on numerous executive teams to help them go from good to great.

He gave me some advice that changed everything.

Great businesses have less friction.

Less friction = less fires = less time pulling your hair out.

Easiest way to reduce friction? Document your processes.

Not just written down, but woven tightly into the fabric of your daily workflow.

There has to be a master source—a definitive place everyone can point to and say, “No, we do things this way.”

Even your randomness needs to be deliberate.

These processes can’t just be static rules; they need to be living documents, always open to change and improvement.

Documenting your processes means:

  • Consistency: Everyone on the team started following the same procedures. No more guesswork or individual interpretations.
  • Collaboration: Team members could build on each other’s work much more effectively because the foundation was clear.
  • Efficiency: We drastically reduced those constant check-ins and clarifications about who was doing what, or how something should be done.

This is about keeping those fires from ever starting in the first place.

Think about it: clear, documented processes mean:

  • less friction
  • more predictable outcomes
  • a team that operates with shared understanding

It transforms daily operations from a series of individual efforts into a cohesive, powerful machine.

Unlock that consistency and efficiency in your own company.

Make it great by writing those processes down
