Intelligent Content Recommendations Help Generate More Leads

How polite, not pushy, pop ups can rake in prospects

The Pop Up: effective lead capture medium? OR website equivalent of an annoying kid jumping up and down, screaming “LOOK AT ME” until you are forced to leave…or relent.

No matter what side you’re on, pop ups are proven to be effective. People offer up their information when prompted. If you fall into the latter group, we’ve got good news for you.

Pop ups don’t have to be pushy

Having pop ups on your side doesn’t mean you have to bug website visitors to SIGN UP! SIGN UP NOW! as soon as they land on a page. In fact, we don’t recommend it.

We’ve recently started using two pop up mechanisms on our own site that make polite pop ups possible: SumoMe and BrightInfo.

  • SumoMe is an easy, and free to start, website widget that helps increase website traffic and capture more leads.
  • BrightInfo intelligently personalizes content pop ups based on pages visited to drive more traffic and increase conversions.

Both tools have helped Bright Orange Thread generate new leads without making us feel like we are bombarding our users.

Here’s our key to “polite” pop ups:

Make offers after prospects have warmed up a bit

We don’t slap up a pop up window as soon as our page loads. We wait until users have some time to settle into our site. Once we know they are at least a little bit interested in what we have to say (they’ve spent 30 seconds on our site or they’ve scrolled down), the pop up appears.

Don’t put the pop up in the user’s face

When I’m in the middle of reading a blog post, a new window in my face distracts me and makes me lose my train of thought.
Instead of opting to place the pop up in the middle of the window, we anchor the pop up in the corner. The motion of the “popping up” catches the user’s eye - but it does not require their immediate action.

Target pop up messages to specific website content

We love BrightInfo as a tool because it enables control our ad relevancy. BrightInfo lets us to micro-target what ads appear on what pages and when.

Ad relevancy is important because we don’t want to advertise for tigers on a page that is about giraffes! We want to give them content they are interested in or that helps them take the next step.

Generate more conversions with well placed CTAs

Well-placed, well-timed pop ups are just CTAs that give users an extra nudge to take the next step. You don’t have to be abrasive about asking a user to sign up to get results.
