How to make Google swoon
Every week, we’re answering common questions from CEOs about marketing. Here is this week’s question…
“What do I need to know about SEO?”
Three things: traffic, content, and backlinks.
SEO is about traffic on your website.
The goal of SEO is to lead your Ideal Clients, the clients that bring you profit and joy, to your website so they can discover you.
A measurement of good SEO is when your website is getting more visits and converting those visitors into sales or leads.
SEO is about content on your website.
Google wants to see that you’re helping people.
Which is why you need your expertise written down and easily accessible on your website to draw potential clients in.
You need at least 50 pages of helpful content that answers your clients’ questions for Google to view you as a true expert.
Having 50 answers prepared ensures that you’re ready for any buyer that comes your way.
You put up great content, and Google’s algorithm says, “Nice, this is pretty good!”
SEO is about backlinks.
Backlinks are links on someone else’s website that link back to your website.
Google uses them as votes of confidence for your website, proving that you’re a credible source of expertise for what you do.
So it looks for the opinions of others through backlinks—legitimate others, not backlink farms or fake websites.
And when you have better content, you’ll get more backlinks and more website traffic.
So SEO is about traffic, content, and backlinks.
To get started with SEO, you need to know your Ideal Client so that you can create great content that targets them.
And if you don’t have the details about your Ideal Client written down, your marketers have a fuzzy idea at best of whom you are targeting.
Fuzzy ideas lead to random acts of marketing.
Lock down your marketing and write your Ideal Client Profile.
