Quality + Expectations = Satisfaction
“Misunderstandings are frustrating and energy-consuming. Set expectations upfront to create clarity. Set expectations for others and ask when you’re not clear on what they expect of you. End all meetings with clarity about action items, responsibilities, and due dates.”
The 3 Cs of Setting Expectations
Quality work and satisfactory work are two different things. Your work can be of the highest quality but not satisfy the recipient if there are some unmet expectations.
Satisfactory work is the highest quality and built on firm expectations/guidelines.
To avoid misunderstandings, follow the “3 Cs” rule when setting and understanding expectations:
- Clarify in your mind what you need before you ask for anything.
- Communicate the request and expectations clearly.
- Check for understanding by confirming the other party’s agreement, even by repeating the understanding back to each other.
Work and communicate with these things in mind no matter your position, and you’ll have progress without frustrations.
Set others up for success
Never assume someone knows what you’re talking about. Be clear on the “how” and any W (who, what, when, where) that’s applicable.
Beware of text messaging
Messaging especially can be unreliable. Too often people message using incomplete sentences and thoughts that leave the recipient reeling with confusion.
If you’re on the receiving end of a message, give a confirmation that someone has been heard, and take that off their mental load.
